The courses a healthcare assistant, home carer or nursing home team must hold, the HIQA regulations and the 2005 Act behind each one, and how a care provider proves it at inspection.
Health and safety training for care workers in Ireland is shaped by two regulators at once. The Health and Safety Authority enforces the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 for the carer as an employee, and HIQA inspects the designated centre for the resident's sake under the Health Act 2007 regulations. Both ask the same question in different words: has every member of staff been trained for the risks of the work before meeting them? This guide sets out the courses that answer it for each care role, the regulation behind each course, and the way to keep the record that satisfies both inspectors.

Let's be honest with you. The internet is full of scam training websites and reviews no real customer wrote. That's why we do the opposite. Every review we have comes from a real person who took a real course with us. No fakes. No hidden feedback. They are all on Google Maps, where we can't edit or rewrite them. Be especially careful with scam websites showing reviews that appear to come from platforms such as Reviews.io. Reviews displayed on their own website may be fake, because the website owner can add, edit or fabricate them directly in the site code. Always verify the business on Google Maps instead. Today, we hold the No.1 spot across Ireland, with more real reviews than any other health and safety training company, built on 30 years of real work at honest prices. You don't have to take our word for it. Just tap the Verify us on Google button below and read every review. One last thing, friend to friend: scammers have recently created a website with a name very similar to ours. Our official name is Ireland Safety Training, while a website called "Ireland Safety Courses" has appeared in Google Ads. It is not affiliated with us in any way. Our lawyers are already collecting the necessary evidence and preparing legal proceedings. Until then, please stay careful and always verify who you are dealing with.

Straight answers about the health & safety induction for employees for Ireland learners: local acceptance, online delivery, certification and pricing at Ireland Safety Training.
Manual and patient handling under Chapter 4 of the General Application Regulations 2007, fire safety under the Fire Services Acts and Regulation 28 of the 2013 designated centre regulations, infection prevention and control under Regulation 27, and the general induction required by Section 10 of the 2005 Act. Safeguarding training is required separately by HSE and HIQA policy.
The core is the same: manual and patient handling, infection prevention and control, first aid. A home carer adds lone worker training because they work alone in private homes, and HSE home support contracts list the training a provider must evidence for every carer.
The regulations say periodically and whenever the risk changes. Irish care providers set two or three years for people handling refreshers, and retrain immediately when a new hoist, a new transfer method or a resident with a changed care plan arrives.
HIQA checks that training happened, is in date and is appropriate to the role, not the delivery method. Online CPD certified courses with an assessment and a verifiable certificate are accepted for the theory and awareness elements; practical people handling with equipment is supervised on site.
The care provider, as the user undertaking under the 2005 Act. An agency may supply certificates, but the registered provider must satisfy itself that each agency worker on the floor has the mandatory courses in date and record them on its matrix.
Each staff member against each mandatory course, the date passed, the provider, the certificate verification code and the renewal date, with the certificates stored behind it. That single document answers both the HSA and HIQA.

Every module of our health & safety induction for employees is written by licensed, Chartered (CMIOSH) health and safety consultants with NFQ Level 6 and QQI Level 6 qualifications and years of front line experience in Irish workplaces. Your team is not learning from a random voiceover; they are learning from some of the most qualified safety professionals in the country.
The employee safety training blends clear theory, HD video, real life case studies and interactive quizzes. Staff learn to spot the hazards they actually walk past every day, understand why risk assessments exist, know what to do when the fire alarm sounds and protect their backs when lifting. Real Irish examples make every lesson memorable and practical.
The content is reviewed regularly against the latest Irish and European legislation and HSA guidance, so the workplace safety course your team takes today always reflects current best practice.
With Ireland Safety Training your team receives 24/7 access to the health & safety induction for employees, so learning is always available when they are ready. Employees can also revisit modules anytime, so a quick refresher on fire response or hazard reporting is always one tap away, turning the course into a living safety resource for your whole organisation.

Every employee in every Irish workplace, because the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires training at induction, on role changes and at regular intervals for everyone on the payroll. This is the single course that applies to your entire organisation.
In real life, businesses use our health & safety induction for employees as the company wide baseline: every new starter completes it during induction, existing staff refresh on a rolling cycle, and role specific courses like Manual Handling, Working at Heights or HACCP are layered on top for the people who need them.
That layered approach is exactly what the HSA wants to see, and our employer dashboard makes it effortless to run. Our friendly Irish team is one message away if you want help designing the right training matrix for your company.
The courses a healthcare assistant, home carer or nursing home team must hold, the HIQA regulations and the 2005 Act behind each one, and how a care provider proves it at inspection.
The health and social care sector reports one of the highest rates of non fatal injury to the HSA every year, and the pattern is stable: manual handling of people is the first cause, slips and trips the second, aggression and violence from the people being cared for the third. Add infection exposure, lone working in community care, medication and sharps, and night shifts in premises where residents cannot evacuate themselves, and the training a carer needs looks very different from an office induction. The law recognises that: Chapter 4 of Part 2 of the General Application Regulations 2007 requires manual handling training wherever loads, including people, cannot be moved mechanically, and Regulation 16 of the Care and Welfare of Residents in Designated Centres for Older People Regulations 2013 requires the registered provider to give staff access to appropriate training and to supervise them.
| Role | Must hold | Add for the setting | Regulation behind it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healthcare assistant, nursing home | Patient Handling, Infection Prevention and Control, Fire Safety, Health and Safety Induction | Fire Warden for the night shift, Emergency First Aid, Slips, Trips and Falls | GA Regulations 2007 Chapter 4; Regulations 16, 27 and 28 of S.I. 415 of 2013 |
| Home carer and community nurse | Manual Handling, Patient Handling, Lone Worker, Infection Prevention and Control | Emergency First Aid, Sexual Harassment Awareness | 2005 Act Sections 8 and 10; HSE home support tender requirements |
| Nurse and nurse manager | Patient Handling, Infection Prevention and Control, Risk Assessment, Health and Safety for Managers | Fire Warden, COSHH for medicines and cleaning agents | 2005 Act Sections 19 and 20; Regulation 16 of S.I. 415 of 2013 |
| Catering, cleaning and laundry staff | HACCP Level 1 and 2, Food Allergen Awareness, COSHH, Manual Handling | Infection Prevention and Control, Fire Safety | Regulation (EC) 852/2004; Chemical Agents Regulations 2001 |
| Maintenance and facilities | Legionella, Working at Heights, Electrical Safety, Fire Warden | Asbestos Awareness in older buildings, Ladder Safety | GA Regulations 2007 Parts 3 and 4; Asbestos Regulations 2006 |
Every course in the table is online, about an hour, CPD certified and finished with a verifiable certificate, which matters in a sector that trains on rotas and cannot release a whole shift for a classroom day.
HIQA inspectors work from the regulations and the National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People. On training they check three things: that each staff member has the mandatory courses the centre's own policies name, usually manual and patient handling, fire safety, safeguarding and infection control; that the training is in date, with refresher intervals the provider set and kept; and that there is a training matrix showing who holds what and when it falls due. Regulation 28 on fire precautions is tested hardest, because residents depend on staff to evacuate them, and a centre where night staff cannot show fire training is a repeat finding in published inspection reports. Regulation 27 on infection control gained the same weight after 2020.
The HSA inspects the care provider as an employer. Section 10 of the 2005 Act requires training on recruitment, on a change of task and when new equipment such as a hoist or a new resident care plan arrives, in paid time and in a language the carer understands. Section 19 requires a written risk assessment for the moving and handling of each dependent resident, and Section 20 the safety statement that names the training arrangements. The HSA's guidance on the management of manual handling in healthcare expects a people handling risk assessment per resident and refresher training at intervals the employer sets, with two to three years the norm. Agency staff are covered: the care provider carries the training duty for every agency worker on its floor.
One matrix serves both inspectors if it lists every staff member against every course, the date passed, the certificate code and the renewal date, and if the certificates behind it can be verified online. Put the induction, fire safety and patient handling before the first shift, infection prevention and control in the first week, and the role specific courses in the first month. Review the matrix at every rota change and whenever a resident's care plan changes the handling risk. The training requirements guide gives the legal timing in detail; in care the practical rule is that nobody moves a resident, enters an isolation room or takes a night shift untrained.
The HSA for the carer as an employee, HIQA for the resident; both ask for the same training matrix.
Manual handling of people is the first cause of injury in care and the first course a carer needs.
Each course is about an hour online with a verifiable certificate, so a whole team trains without closing a shift.
The accredited Patient Handling Course is the course every care worker in Ireland needs first: online in about an hour, CPD certified, with a certificate that HIQA and HSA inspectors can verify on the spot, and infection control, fire and first aid one click away.
