The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 obliges every Irish employer to give staff the information, instruction, training and supervision they need to work safely, and the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, Part 4: Work at Height, extends those duties to any task where a fall could cause injury, which includes every ladder and stepladder in the building. Regulation 114 of the 2007 Regulations deals with ladders by name: a ladder may only be used when the risk is low and the task is short, it must stand on firm, stable ground, it must be secured against slipping and it must reach far enough past any landing point. This course is written in compliance with the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and aligned with the Irish framework the HSA enforces, so one certificate satisfies Irish employers and is recognised in the UK as well.

For every four units a leaning ladder rises, its base should sit one unit away from the wall, which produces the 75 degree angle recommended by the HSA and by every ladder manufacturer. Get the angle wrong in either direction and the physics work against you: too upright and the ladder can pitch backwards with you on it, too flat and the feet can skid out from under the load. The course demonstrates the rule visually, then adds the securing sequence you should follow every time: tie both stiles to a solid fixed point when you can, move to a stability device such as spreader bars when you cannot, and treat wedging or footing by a colleague strictly as the final option.

EN 131 is the European standard that portable ladders and stepladders should meet, covering their strength, dimensions, marking and testing. In the course you learn why the standard matters when choosing equipment, what the markings on the stiles tell you about safe loads and intended use, and why an unmarked, home made or visibly modified ladder has no place at work. Choosing a compliant ladder is step one of the safe system the rest of the course builds: assess the task, inspect the equipment, set it up correctly and work on it with three points of contact.

You face 15 multiple choice questions at the end, each offering three possible answers, drawn from all six modules. The pass mark is 75 percent, which means 12 correct answers out of 15. There is no timer, so nothing forces you to rush, and unlimited retakes are included in the price: review whichever module you need and try again straight away. Two complementary layers. First, the pre use check you personally run before every climb and again when anything changes: rungs and stiles for bends and cracks, feet for wear and grip, locking bars and platforms on stepladders, plus dirt, paint or grease that could hide a defect or cause a slip. Anything suspicious takes the ladder straight out of service, clearly labelled as faulty and reported to a manager. Second, the detailed visual inspections a competent person performs at planned intervals with a written record, the layer an HSA inspector or auditor will ask to see. The course also covers the maintenance, repair and storage habits that stop defects developing between inspections.

Irish law does not print a stopwatch figure, but HSA guidance is clear: ladders suit low risk work of short duration, and as a rule of thumb you should not stay in one position for more than about 30 minutes. The course teaches you to treat that guideline as a planning trigger: if the job will run longer, involves heavy materials or needs both hands free for extended periods, the right answer is more suitable access equipment such as a mobile tower or podium steps, and the risk assessment module shows you exactly how to make and record that call.

Stepladders get equal treatment throughout: when a stepladder beats a leaning ladder for the task, opening the spreader bars completely and locking them, standing no higher than the recommended step, keeping your knees below the top and never loading a stepladder sideways.
