Which law applies north of the border, how it differs from the Republic, which online certificates Northern Ireland employers accept, and the courses a cross border workforce needs.
Health and safety courses in Northern Ireland sit under a different legal system from the Republic, enforced by a different regulator, and searches for them come from both sides of the border: a Derry employer with staff in Donegal, a Newry haulier delivering to Dublin, a Belfast care home recruiting from Monaghan. This guide explains the Northern Ireland framework, where it differs from the Irish one, which training transfers across the border and which does not, and how the online courses on this platform are recognised by Northern Ireland employers.

Let's be honest with you. The internet is full of scam training websites and reviews no real customer wrote. That's why we do the opposite. Every review we have comes from a real person who took a real course with us. No fakes. No hidden feedback. They are all on Google Maps, where we can't edit or rewrite them. Be especially careful with scam websites showing reviews that appear to come from platforms such as Reviews.io. Reviews displayed on their own website may be fake, because the website owner can add, edit or fabricate them directly in the site code. Always verify the business on Google Maps instead. Today, we hold the No.1 spot across Ireland, with more real reviews than any other health and safety training company, built on 30 years of real work at honest prices. You don't have to take our word for it. Just tap the Verify us on Google button below and read every review. One last thing, friend to friend: scammers have recently created a website with a name very similar to ours. Our official name is Ireland Safety Training, while a website called "Ireland Safety Courses" has appeared in Google Ads. It is not affiliated with us in any way. Our lawyers are already collecting the necessary evidence and preparing legal proceedings. Until then, please stay careful and always verify who you are dealing with.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland in industry, construction, agriculture and healthcare, and the eleven district councils in offices, shops, warehouses and hospitality, under the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978.
Awareness and compliance training is: manual handling, fire, working at heights, COSHH, asbestos awareness, display screen equipment and food hygiene certificates that are CPD certified and assessed are accepted by Northern Ireland employers. Safe Pass is not accepted as a site card in Northern Ireland, where the CSR card applies.
The CSR card from the Construction Skills Register, obtained after a one day health and safety course and test. Many Northern Ireland sites also accept the CSCS card. A worker on sites in both jurisdictions holds Safe Pass and CSR.
Yes. HSENI, like the HSA, regulates the outcome rather than the method. An assessed online course with a verifiable certificate meets the information and instruction duty under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000; practical competence is added on site where a task needs it.
Regulation 852/2004, retained in Northern Ireland law, requires every food handler to be trained in food hygiene in proportion to their work, and district council environmental health officers check it. A Level 2 equivalent food hygiene and HACCP certificate is the standard evidence.
Under RIDDOR (NI) 1997 to HSENI, or to the district council where it is the enforcing authority. In the Republic the equivalent is the IR1 report to the HSA within ten working days for an injury that keeps a worker off for more than three days.

The certification is aligned with Irish legislation and industry standards, giving your team a recognised qualification accepted across Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Because every certificate is stored securely in each account, staff can re-download proof of training anytime, during an audit, an inspection or a role change. Every certificate carries a unique verification code so HSA inspectors, insurers and auditors can confirm it is authentic in seconds.
For your business, that means a complete, verifiable training record for every single employee, available at the exact moment an inspector asks for it.
Every module of our health & safety induction for employees is written by licensed, Chartered (CMIOSH) health and safety consultants with NFQ Level 6 and QQI Level 6 qualifications and years of front line experience in Irish workplaces. Your team is not learning from a random voiceover; they are learning from some of the most qualified safety professionals in the country.
The employee safety training blends clear theory, HD video, real life case studies and interactive quizzes. Staff learn to spot the hazards they actually walk past every day, understand why risk assessments exist, know what to do when the fire alarm sounds and protect their backs when lifting. Real Irish examples make every lesson memorable and practical.
The content is reviewed regularly against the latest Irish and European legislation and HSA guidance, so the workplace safety course your team takes today always reflects current best practice.
With Ireland Safety Training your team receives 24/7 access to the health & safety induction for employees, so learning is always available when they are ready. Staff complete their safety training during quiet periods on shift, from home in the evening or on the weekend, whatever suits each schedule best.
The learning platform automatically saves progress, meaning anyone can log in from any device and continue exactly where they left off. Workers on nights, weekends or remote sites get the same premium experience as everyone else, every day of the year.
Employees can also revisit modules anytime, so a quick refresher on fire response or hazard reporting is always one tap away, turning the course into a living safety resource for your whole organisation.

Every day, new employees join us to complete their health and safety training alongside Manual Handling, Fire Safety, First Aid and dozens of other accredited programmes.
The numbers speak for themselves: a 98% pass rate, a 4.9 star average rating and thousands of verified 5 star reviews on Google Maps that we cannot edit, delete or hide. Businesses return year after year because our workplace safety course delivers results: consistent compliance, clean reporting and certificates that every employer recognises instantly.
Every employee in every Irish workplace, because the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires training at induction, on role changes and at regular intervals for everyone on the payroll. This is the single course that applies to your entire organisation.
In real life, businesses use our health & safety induction for employees as the company wide baseline: every new starter completes it during induction, existing staff refresh on a rolling cycle, and role specific courses like Manual Handling, Working at Heights or HACCP are layered on top for the people who need them.
That layered approach is exactly what the HSA wants to see, and our employer dashboard makes it effortless to run. Our friendly Irish team is one message away if you want help designing the right training matrix for your company.
Which law applies north of the border, how it differs from the Republic, which online certificates Northern Ireland employers accept, and the courses a cross border workforce needs.
The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland, HSENI, enforces the Health and Safety at Work (Northern Ireland) Order 1978 in industry, construction, agriculture and healthcare, while the eleven district councils enforce it in offices, shops, warehouses and hospitality. The Order is the Northern Ireland equivalent of the Republic's 2005 Act and of Great Britain's 1974 Act, and it carries the same core duties: Article 4 on the employer's general duty, including information, instruction, training and supervision, and the capabilities and training regulation of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000, which requires training on recruitment, on a change of risk and periodically. Beneath them sit Northern Ireland versions of the familiar regulations: Manual Handling Operations Regulations (NI) 1992, Work at Height Regulations (NI) 2005, Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (NI) 2003, Control of Asbestos Regulations (NI) 2012, Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations (NI) 1992, Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982 and RIDDOR (NI) 1997 for reporting.
| Topic | Northern Ireland | Republic of Ireland |
|---|---|---|
| Regulator | HSENI and district councils | Health and Safety Authority |
| Primary law | Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 | Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 |
| Construction site card | CSR card (Construction Skills Register); CSCS widely accepted | SOLAS Safe Pass; CSCS for named trades |
| Fire safety | Fire and Rescue Services (NI) Order 2006 and Fire Safety Regulations (NI) 2010: fire risk assessment by the appropriate person | Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003: duty on the person having control |
| Food hygiene | Food Standards Agency in Northern Ireland; Food Hygiene Regulations (NI) 2006; Regulation 852/2004 retained | national food safety authority; Regulation (EC) 852/2004 |
| Accident reporting | RIDDOR (NI) 1997 to HSENI | IR1 form to the HSA within ten working days |
| Qualification frameworks | Ofqual and CCEA regulated awards (RQF) | QQI awards on the National Framework of Qualifications |
The duties are near identical because both systems implement the same European directives; the paperwork, the regulator and the site cards differ. A worker crossing the border every day meets the same hazards and needs the same training, with the local card and the local reporting form on top.
Awareness and compliance training transfers. A manual handling, fire safety, working at heights, COSHH, asbestos awareness, display screen equipment or food hygiene certificate that is CPD certified and assessed is accepted by employers on both sides, because the content is the same European derived content and neither regulator approves providers. What does not transfer is the statutory card: Safe Pass is not a CSR card and a CSR card is not Safe Pass, so a construction worker on sites in both jurisdictions holds both. First aid is the other exception: Northern Ireland employers follow the HSENI first aid needs assessment and expect a First Aid at Work or Emergency First Aid at Work certificate from a provider meeting HSENI's due diligence guidance, while Republic employers follow the HSA Occupational First Aid standard; online emergency first aid training is accepted as the awareness element in both and the practical assessment is done locally.
The pattern is the same as in the Republic and in Great Britain: an induction for every new starter, manual handling for anyone who lifts, fire safety for everyone and fire warden training for the people named in the fire risk assessment, working at heights under the 2005 NI regulations, COSHH under the 2003 NI regulations, asbestos awareness under Regulation 10 of the 2012 NI regulations for every trade that may disturb asbestos, display screen equipment for office staff, food hygiene and HACCP for every food handler under Regulation 852/2004 and emergency first aid awareness for the people the needs assessment names. Each is available here online, in about an hour, with a verifiable certificate.
An employer with sites in Newry and Dundalk, or staff who live in Lifford and work in Strabane, runs one training matrix with a jurisdiction column. The shared courses are recorded once and accepted at both sites; the Safe Pass or CSR card, the first aid certificate and the reporting procedure are recorded per jurisdiction. Fire wardens are nominated per building under the local fire law, and the safety statement required in the Republic and the written health and safety policy required in Northern Ireland for five or more employees both name the training arrangements. Keep the certificates verifiable: an HSENI inspector, like an HSA inspector, asks for the record first and the certificate behind it second.
The Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978 and its regulations, enforced by HSENI and the district councils.
Training transfers across the border; Safe Pass and the CSR card do not.
CPD certified, assessed, verifiable courses are accepted by employers in both jurisdictions for the awareness tier.
The accredited Health and Safety Course covers the induction every employer in Northern Ireland and the Republic must give; online in about an hour, CPD certified, with a verifiable certificate that is accepted on both sides of the border.
