Where the Irish numbers come from, work related deaths by year and sector, the triggers behind the non fatal injuries, what the figures leave out, and the training each category points to.
Irish health and safety statistics come almost entirely from one source, the Health and Safety Authority's annual review of workplace injury, illness and fatality, built from the accidents employers are legally required to report and from the Authority's own investigations. Read properly, the numbers tell an employer which hazards actually hurt people in Irish workplaces and therefore which controls and which training matter most. This guide sets out the headline figures, explains what they include and what they leave out, and connects each category to the regulation and the course that answers it.

Let's be honest with you. The internet is full of scam training websites and reviews no real customer wrote. That's why we do the opposite. Every review we have comes from a real person who took a real course with us. No fakes. No hidden feedback. They are all on Google Maps, where we can't edit or rewrite them. Be especially careful with scam websites showing reviews that appear to come from platforms such as Reviews.io. Reviews displayed on their own website may be fake, because the website owner can add, edit or fabricate them directly in the site code. Always verify the business on Google Maps instead. Today, we hold the No.1 spot across Ireland, with more real reviews than any other health and safety training company, built on 30 years of real work at honest prices. You don't have to take our word for it. Just tap the Verify us on Google button below and read every review. One last thing, friend to friend: scammers have recently created a website with a name very similar to ours. Our official name is Ireland Safety Training, while a website called "Ireland Safety Courses" has appeared in Google Ads. It is not affiliated with us in any way. Our lawyers are already collecting the necessary evidence and preparing legal proceedings. Until then, please stay careful and always verify who you are dealing with.

Between the high twenties and the mid fifties over the past decade according to the Health and Safety Authority, with 43 work related deaths recorded in 2023 and 34 in 2024. Agriculture and construction account for the largest shares.
Manual handling, which accounts for roughly a third of the non fatal injuries reported to the Authority each year, followed by slips, trips and falls on the level and then falls from height.
Agriculture, by a distance: a third or more of all work related deaths in most years while employing around five percent of the workforce. Construction is consistently second.
From the accidents employers must report under the 2016 Reporting Regulations (deaths, injuries causing more than three days' absence and dangerous occurrences) and from the Authority's investigations, published in its annual review. The CSO household survey adds a wider measure of injury and illness.
Because only absences of more than three consecutive days are reportable, self employed and short absences are largely missing, work related ill health is barely captured, and road collisions while driving for work are often counted as road deaths.
As the likelihood evidence in the Section 19 risk assessment, as the basis for training priorities (manual handling, slips and trips, work at height first), and as a benchmark for their own injury rate in the safety statement review.

Where the Irish numbers come from, work related deaths by year and sector, the triggers behind the non fatal injuries, what the figures leave out, and the training each category points to.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Reporting of Accidents and Dangerous Occurrences) Regulations 2016 require employers to report every work related death and every injury that keeps an employee from their normal work for more than three consecutive days, along with a list of dangerous occurrences, on the Authority's IR1 and IR3 forms within ten working days. Those reports, plus the Authority's investigations, produce the annual statistics. The Central Statistics Office adds a second view through its household survey questions on work related injury and illness, which consistently find several times more injuries than employers report, because short absences, self employed workers and unreported incidents never reach the Authority.
Over the past decade the annual total of work related deaths in Ireland has moved between the high twenties and the mid fifties, with 43 recorded in 2023 and 34 in 2024 according to the Authority's published figures. Two features never change. Agriculture is the deadliest sector by a distance: it accounts for a third or more of all work related deaths in most years while employing around five percent of the workforce, with tractors and machinery, falls, livestock and slurry the recurring causes, and older farmers and children heavily represented. Construction is consistently second, with falls from height, vehicle and plant incidents and collapses leading. Vehicles at work, including on public roads, are the single largest trigger across all sectors.
| Trigger | Share of reported injuries | Where it happens most | The regulation and the course |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual handling | Roughly a third, the largest category every year | Health and social care, warehousing, retail, manufacturing, construction | GA Regulations 2007 Part 2 Chapter 4; Manual Handling, Patient Handling |
| Slips, trips and falls on the level | Around a fifth | Every sector, with hospitality, retail and healthcare prominent | GA Regulations 2007 Part 2 Chapter 1; Slips, Trips and Falls |
| Falls from height | A smaller share, a large share of the serious and fatal injuries | Construction, agriculture, maintenance, warehousing | GA Regulations 2007 Part 4; Working at Heights, Ladder Safety |
| Struck by or contact with objects and machinery | A significant share | Manufacturing, construction, agriculture | GA Regulations 2007 Part 2 Chapter 2; Abrasive Wheels, PPE |
| Physical assault and aggression | A growing share in care and public facing work | Health and social care, retail, security | 2005 Act Section 8; Lone Worker |
| Vehicles at work | Fewer injuries, the leading cause of death | Agriculture, construction, transport, warehousing | GA Regulations 2007 Part 2; Warehouse Safety |
Employers report around eight to nine thousand non fatal injuries a year. The health and social care sector, through the public health service, is the largest single reporter, which reflects both its size and the weight of patient handling in its injury profile.
Three gaps matter when reading Irish statistics. Reporting starts at more than three days' absence, so the many injuries that cost a day or two never appear. Work related ill health, from musculoskeletal disorders to stress, is barely captured by accident reporting and appears mainly in the CSO survey and in occupational health data. And road traffic collisions involving people driving for work are often recorded as road deaths rather than work deaths, which understates the single largest cause. An employer benchmarking their own figures should compare like with like: reportable injuries against the Authority's figures, all injuries against the survey rates.
The categories at the top of the injury table are the categories the regulations name for training, and the order is instructive. Manual handling is the first course almost every Irish workplace needs, because it is the first cause of injury; slips, trips and falls is the second because it is the second; working at heights matters out of proportion to its count because its injuries kill and disable. The fatal statistics add the sector lens: agriculture and construction need height, machinery and vehicle training before anything else, and care settings need patient handling and aggression awareness. A training matrix built from the risk assessment should look, in its priorities, like this page.
Section 19 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 asks for hazards to be identified and risks assessed; the national figures are the evidence base for the likelihood side of that assessment. Cite the sector rate for your industry, set leading indicators (inspections done, training current, near misses reported) against the lagging ones (injuries, days lost), and review the safety statement when the Authority publishes its annual figures. An inspector reads a statement that uses the national data as the work of an employer who understands their risks.
HSA statistics are built from injuries over three days' absence reported under the 2016 Regulations; surveys find several times more.
The two sectors with the most deaths every year; vehicles, falls and machinery the recurring causes.
Roughly a third of reported injuries, then slips, trips and falls, then the falls from height that kill.
The accredited Health and Safety Course is the induction behind every figure on this page, and the courses in the table are the controls for each category: about an hour online each, CPD certified, with a verifiable certificate the moment you pass.
